411th Infantry Regiment

Overseas, was attached to the 411th Infantry Regiment of the 103d Infantry Division as a radio operator where there were numerous close calls and scary episodes but survived all with no injuries.
Was there when we opened the gates of one of the six Nazi concentration camps surrounding the city of Landsberg, Germany. Horrible beyond description. MORE

1946, A busy year. Discharged. Started college. Got married. Started family.
1949, Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, University of Florida.

U of F Gator ( the real thing)

Joined CBS when Television was the poor stepchild of Radio. Helped nurture TV through its infancy.

Was Director of Audio and Video Engineering during the explosion of TV technology that we take for granted today. Played a major role in all of that.
During "twilight" of career, was Director of Television Facilities Planning, crystal balling TV's future and planning and budgeting for the 21st Century.
Altogether a very satisfying career.

Retired CBS Engineers and Technicians have an association of more than 500 members that meets three times a year for luncheons in the New Your Metropolitan Area. Have not been able to attend any of the luncheons but keep in touch with many via e-mail. Their new WEBPAGE has some interesting, pithy, and unexpurgated reminiscences of the "good old days" at CBS.

After retiring to Florida, witnessed the Challenger Disaster, the sad price of trying to do too much too fast.
Knew many real heros during lifetime and saw the demise of many of them.

Learned a healthy respect for the sanctity of human life.
Take care out there. It is a dangerous world.

Now, About Retirement:
Retired to home town and live right on the beach with Sally, my spouse of more than 50 years. See many exciting things almost every day......dolphins, pelicans, right whales, leaping manta rays, storms on the ocean, spectacular lightning displays and sunsets ..... and occasional waterspouts.

What's not to like?

Can watch the Cape Canaveral rocket launches from our front porch.
The night launches are breathtaking.

Hurricanes have given us a few anxious moments but, so far. no direct hits.

Many old friends live here or nearby so we have as active a social life as we can handle........... Also lots of fine restaurants in and around St. Augustine, to which my ever-increasing girth can attest.

Sally is an excellent artist (watercolors). She has won many awards. Some of her watercolors are now available for your viewing pleasure on her "under construction" website:

Check it out.

Active in the 103d Infantry Division of WWII Association. Sally and I went to France with them for the 50th Anniversary of the liberation of Alsace Lorraine. A most moving experience.

Been busy at the computer.

Two books. First book, PAPA'S WAR, mentioned above, (WW ll memoires, written for my grandson). There are several links above to excerpts from it but if you want the whole thing ,

Or, try to get your hands on a hard copy of it. It can be found in several libraries, e.g. North Texas University, Florida State University History Library, University of Florida Smathers Library, U.S. Army Military History Institute Library, St. Johns County, Florida, Public Library System, etc.)

Second book, a novel. Have also written a screenplay based on the book. It is much too long but I'm chopping away at it. The story has been optioned for possible use as a made-for-TV movie or a movie for theatrical release. Even if nothing comes of it, it has been an exciting ride.
( Keep checking. More to come)
