Who is this guy?

Glad you asked.

As a kid growing up in a small town,  he never dreamed where life might ultimately take him.

Age 11, Very nearly electrocuted.

This sparked a lifelong interest in things electrical.

Learned Morse code and studied for an Amateur Radio Operator's License.
Never got the Ham ticket because the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor the day before the exam was scheduled and all amateur radio activities were terminated for the duration.

While in high school, worked for an electrical contractor. Participated in the design of the "world's most efficient cat house" to be built by a local madam.

Before entering service, witnessed the sinking of the tanker "Gulf America" by a German sub. Also saw a German sub surfaced, at night, in the St. Augustine harbor inlet charging its batteries. Exciting stuff for a kid.

After basic training at North Camp Hood, Texas, spent a short time in the Army Specialized Training Program at North Texas State Teachers College, now the University of North Texas.

.......but when troops were needed for the liberation of Europe, ASTP was summarily terminated and we were shipped out to be "real" soldiers.

Study for Ham license ultimately resulted in assignment to the 103d Infantry Division Signal Company.
